Brave you. Can see why you created a sensation. Great for short poses but no finesse here....fun.

I.m not surprised it caused a sensation! I think it's brilliant; there is a release in the leg on the left that just makes is flow, if that makes any sense at all????

It's got dynamism and strength, which is probably what you were after - knives are made for this sort of work, if you can really say "this sort", because it's pretty well unique I should think. I wish I could have heard the comments - "my dear, that Amanda... she's using a TROWEL!"; "Showing off, dear, take no notice...."; "What's wrong with painting NICELY, that's what I'd like to know!"; "Oh she's a stranger to prettiness, dear.... : she could make a nice rose look as though it's about to explode!" But I'm sure your classmates aren't like that really...... (I've encountered a few who were EXACTLY like that, though.) I like it: it's bold and it hits you between the eyes.

Well, now, I probably was showing off. I was also experimenting - could I paint him with those materials in 15 minutes? It was pure chance that we had a male model this week; I'd still have tried it iif we had had a female model, though. It was fun, Sylvia, and finesse in 15 minutes would be hard even without a knife. As to the reaction - if there were any whose thought processes Robert captured , they kept it to themselves. I'm not entirely sure what Gudrun means, but I like it anyway :-)

i 'm a big fan of Frank Auerbach, and his work, which this reminds me of so much. Dynamic, and one of the best works you've posted, irrespective of the time taken. This is brilliant.

Two things from this superb experiment. Must try a large knife and also source Titanium Buff. I would guess Gudrun is hinting at lost and found edges on his right leg, What size is it please?

The knife is around 27cm long including the handle; the gessoed bit of the cardboard is about 51 x 42 cm.

15 minute pose. Acrylic on gessoed cardboard. Sennelier Abstract heavy body acrylic (primaries red, yellow and blue + titanium buff), huge Liquitex knife (no. 13). Created a small sensation in the room when people saw what I was using :-)
