I love steam engines Adele and this one looks okay to me. I love the steam coming out of the chimney. You can almost here it rumbling along.

Lovely composition Adele. I find mechanical things quite difficult to paint. You have done well here.

You've got this just right Adele. I like it very much.

I'm amazed you'd even attempt this, Adele, well done, great job! Lots of complicated perspective and turnings, ellipses, go and have a lie down girl!

A difficult subject well achieved, Adele.

Thank you Ellen, Henry, Michael, Caroline, Cesare, John and Margaret. Think I'll look for something simpler now!!

Love the steam engine Adele

Marvellous adele is it fred.

Very nice Adele like this one very much

You have caught this old lady very well Adele, must have been difficult to draw.

Beautiful result of a very complicated subject, Adele.

Thank you Helen, Russ, Dennis, Stephen and Mia. Is Fred a CBBC character Russ? This was too difficult to draw unaided so I had to put lots more reference points in and even then I was having lots of problems - I'm glad it's finished though.

Always drawn to this subject having done lots. The wheels let it down as far as perspective and relevant sizes but I like the figures, colours and setting. Keep at it Adele

Its great as it is Adele!!!

Really delightful, Adele! There's a very nostalgic charm to the piece, and the detail is very well observed and executed.

You've done a superb job of all those difficult perspectives Adele, figures are really good too.

Thank you Derek, Chandra, Seok and Fiona. Derek - Yes, you are right. The wheels were the most problematic and are still not "right". So lots more practice on wheels!

A lovely touch of nostalgia. The school obviously didn't recognise your talent as all your work is very good. I only hope some of them are viewing your work now.

Thank you Linda. I think most of the teachers must have passed on by now, and the school was demolished years ago.

I took a photo of this traction engine a couple of years ago at the Beamish Museum in Gateshead and used a different setting of country lanes to paint it in. It has taken me a while to complete because I couldn't get the perspective right, but it is as good as it is going to get and I have decided not to fiddle with it anymore.

About the Artist
Adele Elgood

When I was a young girl my parents had a large mirror which had an etching of a "crinoline lady" on. I would spend hours copying this. In the 1960's when I was at Secondary school, I was told to give up painting and drawing as I was useless and would never be any good. Following these words of…
