Meerkat by Adam Wheal

This is a beautiful watercolour, Adam. Very good background and I think you painted the look in his eyes very well.

So you've got an oil; an acrylic - two acrylics, I think; a drawing in charcoal and chalk; and now a watercolour - you're not afraid to try the lot, are you? And I think you're absolutely right to - it's much more fun to play with all the toys available for one thing, and working in one medium teaches you so much about all the others. This is a very distinguished Meerkat, good strong tones, very good subdued highlights in the eyes, and the movement of the fur, which is hard to do, is brought off just about perfectly. Sometimes I look at paintings of animals in galleries, labelled as squirrels for example, and think .... "yes; well.... if you say so..."; and indeed my nephew, who would be cut out of my will if I had any money, accused one of my very own badgers of being a skunk.... little swine. But this is a fully paid-up Meerkat, all right.... You have a good eye, and what's more important, you USE it.
