Hi Alan, I'm reasonably happy with the aerial perspective, what do you think? I've tried to be less photo graphic and suggest the character of the place  instead. How successful do you think this has been? Regards John.

Yes, you’re starting to achieve some painterly brush marks which is excellent, some of your greens aren’t too convincing if I’m honest. A colour mixing chart would be a good investment. Aerial perspective could be improved, lighter and often blue hues work well in the distance - half close or squint your eyes and it all looks a bit flat, so increase the tonal values… often this means darkest in the foreground and counterchange throughout the painting (light against dark and visa-versa) Select a light source and exploit it to your advantage, as in strong shadows etc. All these things help to give the illusion of a three- dimensional painting, when we know that it’s actually a two-dimensional flat plane. Soften that ridge line where it meets the sky, fingers are great for this. But in general, a reasonable decent painting, it’s just these finer points that you need to work on John. These are my observations, others may see things differently - it’s in no way intended as a criticism.
