Sorry if this isn't the correct forum...it's not exactly a 'work in progress' candidate, so I figured 'critique' instead, as I am looking for some thoughts, please...
I'm thinking, when I turn this idea into a painting, that it is going to need something....but I'm not sure what, yet.
If you have any ideas or suggestions on composition and/or anything that I should add to this, I'd be grateful for your thoughts, please.
It is a sandstone field entrance gate post, where there is no gate, nor a pair. The hedge does not come up to it either, so it has quite a character, I feel, being so solid and solitary , amongst the grasses. In composition terms, I feel I mustn't make it dead centre...however it must remain the main focus.... I'm not entirely sure what I should do with the remainder to keep it interesting...there's obviously background context I can use (field/hedgerow/sky etc), but I wondered if anyone had any other ideas, please? (Maybe it should be so much the main character that there is very little background/context to the remainder, almost like a close-up study?) Many thanks in advance.

I'm not usually the first to jump in, but I've just logged on. I would definitely make it off centre and then add some kind of diagonal foreground lead in, be it a path (depending on the size of the stone) or perhaps a row of plants/grass stones etc?Thank you. If I remember correctly, it's probably around 5ft tall. I think a hint of a path might be interesting (almost like it is on a country walking route rather than a farm-machinery width entrance to the field)

You COULD centre the post, Hockney would get away with it, but I also would move it a tad to the left.
Yes, a lead in is always a good move, and I would keep the background fairly low key, making the old post and grasses the focal point.
Cut into the post with some long grasses to break the shape up a bit, artist’s license comes to mind!

Certainly move it a little - you CAN make a centred object work, in a square format, but it usually looks a bit contrived, and might in this case convert your post to the status of a megalith.I feel it's charm is as an old gatepost, so I'd definitely want to avoid megalith proportions. thanks

Well it's all been said......some great suggestions . One ofmine would be move it to the left a tad...eliminate the background apart from interesting colour and grow your grasses tall...cow parsley is tnice. My thoughts .I think I'm going to try making a soft-focus-hint, of fields and a background treeline/hedgerow, to create distance. I will be keeping any grasses lower than the top of the post. Thank you

What an interesting find Gerry. I like your existing background and sketchy grasses, but would probably also move it to the left of centre. If you want it to appear 5ft tall which is obviously an important and interesting part of it, you need to do something to emphasise that in its surroundings.
Look forward to the next stage! Lovely subtle drawing by the way.
