An hour and a half spent outside this morning. Water based oils. Straight in with brush, altering perspective as I went along. This is our art club premises. Was just interested in basic representation. Have photo for reference and will visit again later this week. I was so absorbed, it was very relaxing. I mean to add colour and tone and "break" the painting with painting knife ( or "palette knife" as most of us incorrectly call it.)

This so good, Marjorie, for just one and a half hours. Actually it's very good anyway, regardless. That feeling of freedom when you just let go is brilliant. I hope we get to see the finished article. Great start! Bri

Terrific Marjorie. I really intend to look at those water based oils. I have some of the oily stuff but haven't got used to it at all yet.

It's coming on brilliantly, Marjorie. It's a beautiful building and you've caught it really well, so I wouldn't worry about the chocolate box potential. I felt the same when I drew Dove Cottage, but in the end just presented what was there, more or less. I see you've brushed some red into the rendering and maybe that's the way to go with regards to colour, that and the varying blue-greys in the slate roof and road. I think the lighter sections and highlights will work a treat once you've applied them, to say nothing of those little bursts of colour that the flowers will bring... Looking good! Bri

I wouldn't worry about 'choc box' issues - that's the term some people use to describe anything that doesn't look like a wharf in Hull: the same sort of people who natter about 'soft southerners', just because we've got better weather.... Some sites are picturesque and are decorated in such a way as to make them more so, with planting and all the rest of it. What you were drawn to here was the shape of the building - you could make that stark and minimalist if you wanted to; paint a glue-sniffer outside; show a mugging in progress; have a drunken couple at it in the doorway..... But on the whole - I wouldn't. Because THAT would be the invention, not any appealing version of the scene - be brutally realistic, Marjorie - paint those hollyhocks!

Actually, you could almost convert me to water miscible oils if this is what you can do with them - I like the subtlety of your colours, and the brilliant blending you've achieved without sacrificing definition. You couldn't 'alf spoil it by overworking, mind...... I'm sure you won't - that would be the way to the Black Magic Premier Assortment...
