I've not worked on toned watercolour paper before. Yesterday some Hahnemuhle tones watercolour paper arrived. I wanted to keep it simple as I was just trying the paper out. I chose a limited palette of yellow, red and blue. I drew a quick basic sketch. I wanted to work fairly quickly so mixed a variety of tones before I started. This allowed me to then apply the washes quick. I then put some basic details in. Here are the stages from the sketch onwards.
Well that turned out well , it’s a great portrait Denise thanks for sharing the stages of its development.
Yes Denise, always good to see the process.  I like the result.  Plus…we know that paper is good.  Haven’t tried it…just Langton, Bokingford, Arches and Windsor and Newton.  All ok for me, but I prefer Arches and Langton.
All their papers are excellent; when you've got a bit more money to  hand, try Schoellershammer as well - another German paper, offering the same distinct edges as you've achieved here.
