I wasn’t intended to put this up as a work in progress but thought someone might find it interesting.  It in a style I haven’t used in a very long time, don’t know why I stopped using it, probably like everyone else it we just move on .  I think it’s better to explain as if go along rather that dig a hole for myself trying to explain it.  The initial sketch, leaves with a few berries , inspired by a bush in my garden a few weeks ago, As I wasn’t intending sharing it I have taken many photos of the early stages so I will go straight to the next stage. Used hardly any watercolour with the paint to give the background a thickness some of the branches are painted in and I used the lift out technique to creat others. I want the back quite dark and in the next stage I will add lighter colours, I know it’s the opposite way around to the normal process with watercolour but with thick bodied paint it work as long as you don’t blend it in.
Adding base colours to the larger outer leaves, I will ad the veining later . The first three photos were taken on the easel out of the direct daylight, the last was deliberately taken in daylight to pick out the colours .

Looking good already.  I like the way you’ve painted the background leaves.
Very promising Paul. Looking forward to seeing it finished.
Really like the bright red over the darker brownish red background.
When I saw the first post I did wonder how you were going to pull the foreground out of the background.  I shall look forward to seeing those leaves emerge as you progress.
Thank for the comments Lew, George, Sandra and Tony. Tony I had the same thought, joking aside, this is how I envisioned it looking at this stage , bringing in the detailing and darkening the edges of the leaves . I will adjust things also I progress and if necessary make changes where needs be.
This is going so well. I thought the treatment of the leaves was so good, but the darkness of the berries takes it to another level.
Fascinating to see your progress and method here Dixie. Each stage is exciting.
Thank you Susan and Tessa , I really pleased that you are enjoying this Tessa . I haven’t had the opportunity to do anything for the last couple of days , Christmas shopping etc getting in the eat bahh humbug, I also discovered that I had no more Alizarin Crimson left , don’t use it very often but I thought I had a spare tube.  Added a bit more base colours to the upper leaves and some details in the lower leaves, looks very bright as the photo is taken under the light , far to dull a day to get a photo without it . The painting in the background is another in working on but won’t present it as WIP , don’t want to bore you all that much , I will add a pic as I have already been asked about it .
I’ve come as far as I want to go with this one, at risk of fiddling around with it, I have done a couple of times already today. I won’t put it on the gallery just yet as the natural light is so poor and I prefer to take my photos in natural light.
Nice work Paul
