I remember a post on here ages ago about red ground colour with a link to a video and although I've searched I can't find the post. I remember thinking I was going to give it a go. A couple of years ago I painted a still life of an orchid I have. I feel I did a good job of the painting but it lacks something. I have some photos of the orchid in flower so I've decided to paint the same subject with an orange toned ground and leave bits of the underpainting showing. It's a mix of cad orange and winsor red. I thought if I did the same subject I could compare the two and see which I prefer. I've put some outlines on today with davy's grey. I've tried editing this to stop the text getting split but its not having it.

I’ve discussed using a red ground on here some time ago. The late Fred Cuming often used red, as is shown in one of his demonstrations in his DVD Another Figure in the Landscape! Fabulous video and well worth buying if you’re into landscape painting, which I am…
Thanks Alan. I've managed to find The Art of Fred Cuming DVD on eBay, which is the nearest thing I can find. The book is selling for crazy money.  I've not really done much landscapes. I've no idea why. Silly really because I'm surrounded by fabulous coastline.
His book is rather expensive I must admit! I bought a copy directly from Fred’s home studio around three years ago, which he signed for me! Something I have kept in mint condition obviously! Just had a look online, they’ve gone up drastically since his death last year! And no new books available!

I thought my leaves were green until I painted the background in!  I'll have to wait for it to dry and glaze it. Sorry second photo is a bit blurry.
Great Collette. Very good looking piece
Lovely result Collette. I’m a fan of coloured grounds, they can lead to exciting results.
Looks great Collette.
Not an expert on this practice - but, I did paint an acrylic some years ago, with a strong crimson ground beneath a field - (I'm a bit hazy on the details, though).  I thought it had a vibrancy, and plainly it did, because it sold in a matter of hours. This - oh, do believe me! - does not often happen.
Thank you Martin, Marjorie & Denise.  Robert I'm very sure you've far more idea than me, I'm making this up as I go along. I hope I've left enough orange showing. Its harder than it looks to be random and not make a pattern or leave a solid outline. I ordered a DVD which will probably arrive after I've finished. I'm feeling impatient for it to dry now and it's so slow this time of year, I half wish I'd done this in acrylic. I might start another while I wait.
Good progress so far Collette - it’s great to experiment using different coloured grounds, I generally leave touches of this colour to show through… it creates a sense of continuity throughout the painting!
I used to do underpainting in green-ish colour, but never like you Collette, so I was happily looking at it, the way it has turned up - I love the tonal range and worm colours around. Beautiful!
