This year the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) annual Open Water show is in Halifax Nova Scotia which is (only) a 3.5 hour drive from where I live. So I'm preparing a new watercolour for the entry deadline which is June 16th. The rules state it has to be a water-soluble media so most entries will be traditional watercolour. I am trying out painting on Arches watercolour board instead of their paper so that I can avoid framing under glass as sealing it with cold wax is allowable and makes for more flexible framing. So here is the start after putting in a few hours on it. It is 30"w c 20" h. Minimal pencil sketching - there will be rocks getting larger towards the bottom and on the top rocks 3 small figures will be watching the breaking wave.

Thanks Robert, really appreciate you viewing this as it progresses. I will try to finish the foreground today and then concentrate on adding the final details and textures. Leaving the 3 people for the end which is probably a mistake as there will be the pressure to get them right. I'm thinking of giving it the title "Stand Back!" as the actual location for this is at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada and a number of people have died at this spot due to getting too close to the slippery rocks and breaking waves.

Finished except for some final tweaking but going to set it aside for a day or two to look again with fresh eyes. If anyone has some thoughts on anything that should be changed please let me know. 30" w by 20" h, watercolour on Arches watercolour board. The board is now somewhat warped so I have to see about getting that out by damping the back and pressing it under some weights, hopefully that will work.

Next step in the progress after taking a break for a couple of days. I haven't painted in watercolour much over the past few years so am finding my way again. It doesn't help that the Arches watercolour board does not respond (to me) as well as the paper when doing graded washes, etc.
