I'm nearly finished now, I got a bit carried away and forgot to post an update. Anyway, this has been a lot of fun and I learnt a lot which I think will help when I start painting in oils.
Tremendous work John.  How did you achieve the deep black?
A very impressive interpretation of a great work of art!  Yes, I was wondering about that black also...
I love this, it looks fantastic.
Hi all, thank you. I did the background using a Derwent drawing Ivory Black pencil. It's a really deep black. I made a mistake with it though - It leaves pencil marks which can be seen in a certain light so I used Sansodor and a 1" brush to smooth it out. It did, but it also left it matt and not as black as it was. I adjusted the image to show the black as it should be. I have got some of Stuart Semples Black 3.0 (Ridiculously dark, matt black which absorbs 99% of visible light) and was considering using that for the background but I'm not sure if it'll spoil it, it really is the blackest black. But anyway, for pencils, the blackest are Derwent drawing and Staedtler Mars Lumograph black. Here's an unadjusted photo of the drawing and the Black 3.0 next to it.
Thank you John for your very informative reply.  I see the difference in the blacks.
