Lightships were used for many years around the British coast some note well known than others, Goodwin Sands, The Mummbles etc. There is one very famous lightship LV72 Juno , know as Juno , used to mark the DDay landing beach Juno hence the name. The ship has been abandoned on the river near Neath for many years and is the subject of a funding raising campaign with the aim of restoring her . I find the subject absolutely fascinating and have wanted to do a watercolour for quite a few years, well here is my attempt. Some historical photos from the many that I’ve studied over the last week or so.

My attempt  on A3 loose canvas.
Looks promising Paul, Looking forward to seeing it finished.
Thank you George, I think it will be a while before it’s completed. A little bit more done just the base colours.
It is such a shame when vessels like this are lost to the elements. Looking forward to seeing it finished.
Thanks Denise , I agree it’s sad to see historic vessels etc left to rot away fortunately there are people who take up the challenge to have them restored if possible. It’s also a vase of how important the public view the items to be restored and of course the financial climate has a huge impact on what money is raised .
This is looking really good Paul ... you're off to a great start. I hadn't heard of JUNO but I did come across the SPURN lightship when visiting Kingston-upon-Hull a few years ago. I've painted and drawn her a few times but the best fun was when I used animation software to make her light rotate and flash.  I'm looking forward to watching JUNO develop.
Fantastic story Dixie. I cannot think where this ship is and I lived in Swansea for some years. Looking out for your finished piece!!!
Thank you John and Jennifer, pity you didn’t get the opportunity to see it Jennifer . I have done a little more this morning, but taking my time about it .
Some more work done but it happening slowly, having to push myself to find time paint at the moment.
This is looking really good Paul. I know what you mean about finding time for painting.
