I like a challenge, so as we are all in Japanese mode through the olympics I thought I would have a go at drawing a fascinating bridge that I came across in my travels.  It is not straight because they like to confuse the evil spirits, so they will not be able to follow you.  But I must say that this was one of the hardest things I have attempted to draw and I was confused many times.
Very unusual, and not an evil spirit in sight! Good accurate drawing Linda, along with the perspective!
It has a lot of nice shapes going on about it Linda, I really like it. You made me laugh, it might ward away evil spirits but it sends you doolally.
I’ve made progress, but I don’t know where I am going with this.  I’m thinking of turning it into a line and wash.
Looking great Linda, yes I would do… get some neutral grey tones dropped in perhaps to add some depth!
I think it's looking really beautiful already Linda.
Thanks Alan and Denise for your words of encouragement.  Greys in the background.  But I’m not good at trees in watercolour.  I will have to put it away for a day to see what I can fix. The background still does not look right.
But the trees form a supporting role in this painting, so you don't need to labour over them (hint: just determine the source of light and put your darks in accordingly - it doesn't half solve a lot of problems).   This is a fascinating image and already works: just concentrate on the main features - you don't need to slave over the supporting elements.
Thanks for the tips Robert. I’m at the stage now, when I am wondering if it is finished and if I were to do it again what I would do differently.  Part of my disappointment with this is the disappointment I had when visiting several Japanese gardens and that is the lack of colour.  I expected more acers, cherry trees and azaleas, but they are infrequent.  There are more of these in my garden than in the acres of this one.
I think it looks perfect as is. The greens look rich and the hint of lemon flowers and deep purple flowers look good surrounding the bridge. The bridge is the main focus, it's unusual and you have done a lovely job of it.
Many thanks Denise.  You are too kind.
