I like a challenge, so as we are all in Japanese mode through the olympics I thought I would have a go at drawing a fascinating bridge that I came across in my travels. It is not straight because they like to confuse the evil spirits, so they will not be able to follow you. But I must say that this was one of the hardest things I have attempted to draw and I was confused many times.

But the trees form a supporting role in this painting, so you don't need to labour over them (hint: just determine the source of light and put your darks in accordingly - it doesn't half solve a lot of problems).
This is a fascinating image and already works: just concentrate on the main features - you don't need to slave over the supporting elements.

Thanks for the tips Robert.
I’m at the stage now, when I am wondering if it is finished and if I were to do it again what I would do differently. Part of my disappointment with this is the disappointment I had when visiting several Japanese gardens and that is the lack of colour. I expected more acers, cherry trees and azaleas, but they are infrequent. There are more of these in my garden than in the acres of this one.
