Thanks, Gary. Trying to paint immediately after drawing might be where I'm going wrong. So often with groups or classes, unless you've been given warning of the subject beforehand, it's often expected.  Perhaps I should work on and build a store of drawings.

I can understand in groups or classes that there is a time limit to get through everything so I imagine that is why you do both, I just find that I always spot things that need altering the next day. I think there is a difference between studying and creating a finished painting. A lot of my study paintings would probably involve a quick 1 hour drawing and then straight into painting because I had a goal to explore skin tones or colour mixing or how different brushes behave but for my 'final' pieces I take much longer planning the drawing. The drawing at the start of this painting for example took probably 6-7 hours over 2 days and I still ended up altering things once I got to the painting stages. To me, drawing is about getting it as accurate as you can (or want) it to be so you don't need to worry about that as much in the painting stage. I can recommend Stephen Bauman's atelier course on patreon for a few months and vitruvian studios drawing basics recorded course (some of this will test you patience but it helped me tremendously with accurate measuring). This is a post I did on social media a couple of years ago after spending a lot of time practicing drawing and measuring which I hope shows an improvement. The head on the older one looks like a mangled potato with a really flat face 🤣 , granted the newer one took probably 3 times longer to do! Ok I'm wittering too much again - it's all just my opinion and everyone has different goals and thoughts about art but I hope my wittering has been helpful (or interesting).
Thanks Carol and Tessa, I plan to add some flowers, butterflies etc too in a childlike style, representing her loves. She wants me to add a unicorn but I can't do horses (even in the style of a 3 year old!)
Started the next colour layer (mainly the face) and added some flowers then run out of time for the day.
The final picture after colour layer 3 is completed. This is the first time I have used a 'couch' for painting into. Apparently, it is when you cover the previous layer with a very thin layer of pigmented oil so you are painting into the wet. I quite liked working this way. Ive also posted it to the gallery now.
