I've been a little inspired of late to do an impasto/impressionist landscape. Since I fly round Scotland for a day job, I thought I'd use some images i have of Loch Ness as a reference.  Not finished but would love some feedback/guidance as this is way out of my comfort zone

I've taken the liberty to crop your photo, Thomas, as I found the surroundings a bit distracting. I like it. I see a red reflection in the water, and wonder of what it might be.

I like the light here Thomas ( but I’m a big fan of light). I would say, make it the focus….so emphasise the fall of the light as it comes down to the water. This will be the strongest part of the painting which will mean you have to tone down the movement elsewhere otherwise it will distract. Also, the water, as it becomes further away, will be less distinct re the brushstrokes. The brushstrokes should get smaller to convey the recession/distance. Take a look at Jenny Aitken’s work, she’s wonderful re the light, as is her book “Painting the light”.

I agree with Marjorie, and I like your painting's powerful light.  Loch Ness is a place I'd love to visit - probably never will now.  It's very deep, its waters are cold and turbid  -  I think you've conveyed that.

That’s a pretty good attempt so well done! I didn’t give any suggestions earlier because Marjorie had already mentioned the main issues. Keep it going now…

Thank you, I've got a lot of landscape photos to use so lots of practice attempts upcoming.

Indeed, and im hopeful this will help me be looser in my animal portraits.
