I am a group organiser. I started it 6 years ago at the request of members of another group which was just a social gathering. They wanted to learn more about their arts and not just muddle along on their own. I hired a hall for 10 weekly meetings and 7 people turned up to the first session. As the weeks went by numbers rose and I cut off at 20. I don't have any art qualifications but I am a qualified teacher and experienced in business. If I don't know the answer to a query, I have a book at home which will tell me. The group have painted indoors & out, had lessons from professional artists, exhibited in libraries and museums. They have competed amongst themselves and they make me feel quite proud. Members come and go but they are all friendly and blend well together. We only have one rule, Rule 1. - If someone is sitting where you usually sit, find a seat somewhere else. It works very well and they're all happy with it. We have a small sound system for amplifying lecturer's voices when necessary as soe of our members are a little hard of hearing. (I keep this at home). We have a cupboard in the hall where I keep a small stock of papers, paints, pencils, pastels and most other basics an artist might need. We have a small library of intructional books, videos' and DVDs'. I try to make each week a learning curve or I advise and help the members along where necessary. There, I think that's about enough. Why not start one, Patsy? I am sure there must be lots of like minded people near you who would like to paint together and pass on advice and tips to each other. The art group I go to is more of a social occasion than a teaching class and it is a great focus to the week to go and step off the world for a couple of hours on a Thursday morning.

hiya despite many emails...........am still not a member of any local art group.....have given up on the idea.................this website is the only access i have too art folk...................would love too go too a group.......but theres not any in my area......
was thinking off setting up my own...................but lack confidence...........would not know where to start

Ruthy - just find a venue and advertise that an art group will be meeting there. Often village halls (which are sadly under used) will hire a hall out for about £10-£20 for a morning or afternoon. I don't think it is necessary for anyone to be a 'tutor' - just make it a meeting of like minded arty people. You will learn from one another as you go along. I pay £5.00 per session for my art group and consider it money well spent. We do have a tutor, but it is so informal that she doesn't really teach much - we just have a good gossip while we work and it's great.
If you don't want to take on the commitment of hiring a hall, then how about meeting at each member of the group's house in turn? A small group would fit round a kitchen or dining table and it would only be a case of the host providing a cup of tea or coffee.

Great news, Patsy. I think belonging to a group gives you a regular time to focus on your painting. Even if there isn't a tutor as such, it is great to look at others working as you get a lot of ideas and inspiration. I hope you have a lovely time and look forward to seeing the resulting work.
