Ross there’s a good article in the latest edition (June) the Artist by Robert Brindley. Called the Landscape painter and is all about light, colour and tone.
And there’s one in Leisure Painter too!
Hi Gillian!   I have just bought the June issue hoping to read Alan Bickley's article on tone (it hasn't landed yet). So this is great, thank you so much for letting me know :) (about both articles), I'll certainly look out for them..
A couple of images of recent tonal stuff..
I don’t think you have anything to worry about tonally, Ross. Your examples are excellent. Sometimes I think we put off starting, we think we need to do everything perfectly. I know that when I first started painting ( eons ago) I felt I had to read everything. I realised later that I just had to start! Not much will be perfect initially but it’s the “ doing” which is important. I think you know a lot already so take the plunge! I see on the gallery that you have started…why the angst?

Thank you Marjorie, I appreciate your comments. There's no angst as such.  I just want to get better.. I totally agree in that it's the 'doing' that ultimately makes us better (we hope) but to be honest it's been so long since i last painted it's nice just getting used to putting paint on a brush again.  :)
Yayy look what turned up, as well as a little prezzie for me.. Looking forward to devouring this (in a metaphorical sense)..

Who's a lucky boy then?  Great article and great book - get those brushes working!
Great stuff Ross… the Hilder book is really useful in getting you started on the right track… there’s some basic stuff but some of his wips are fairly complicated but worth perseverance!
Thanks both Alan and Robert, I'm going to really enjoy sinking my teeth into these.. :)

Some lovely tones in there, particularly your skies.
