I would put “After …” if I painted a copy of another artist’s work, then there is no doubt to the viewer that it’s a copy. Whether this is acceptable or not, I don’t know, but there are certain members of an art club I belong to that tend to frown upon copied work, but it doesn’t worry me, so long as I am informed that it’s a copy, thus the word “after”.
