you have made a good start , Pat. Like your sketch of the elegant interior. cheers, Syd.
Looking good Pat grand subject. Yesterday I was in Petworth House in Sussex and saw many subjects I would have liked to sketch.
It looks good so far Pat. If Derek had been sketching at Petworth I think he would have been following in illustrious footsteps, isn't that where JMWT spent a great deal of time?
I didn't think that conman colours were lightfast, but correct me if I am wrong. It looks like hard work to me. It is not often that one gets the chance to paint mansions' interiors, as the National Trust does not usually allow photographs inside their properties. It looks as though you are making meticulous progress with this. Best of luck!
Petworth has a good many Turners - most of them rather small, or those on the ground floor were at least: the last time I was there I managed the tour of the first floor, but couldn't manage the stairs to the next one, where I'm told there were many other pictures: but they had to stay un-admired so far as I was concerned. Hot day didn't help - but I digress... (Digessing further, I much preferred a painting by Henry Fuseli to any of the Turners I actually got to see.) Rupert Cordeux, I think it was, was prevented from sketching in one of the Minster churches some time ago: why. on earth? It seems they charged for the privilege, and the same is true in many big houses. The House of Commons probably doesn't care for drawing to be undertaken for security reasons - but it has been painted before, from hundreds of years ago down to the present day. Presumably they thought Sylvia a suspicious character ... well, we've all wondered... Pat, you're not afraid of taking on complex subjects, are you? The difficulty, I would imagine, is knowing what to leave out - mind you; that's so often the issue whatever you're doing. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
Thank you for all your comments. Fortunately this mansion is privately owned so there is no issue with the licence to paint. I have never been to see it which adds to the challenge. Here is the first instalment of "colouring in". https://landscapeartblog.wordpress.com/2016/10/12/how-to-paint-the-interior-of-a-mansion-part-2/ As regards the lightfastness of Cotman Watercolours I asked that question here last year and received many positive replies https://www.painters-online.co.uk/forum/Topic51898.aspx
