He was so lovely - he really was; Alan wasn't really at ease with words, he didn't have that sort of education, so I was delighted to help him write an article for Leisure Painter. He thanked me, not that I'd ever have asked him to, by sending me some brushes - beautiful Winsor and Newton Sables, paints, canvas stretchers, dvds, anything he could think of. I'd have done anything for him, because I learned so much from him; I shall miss our telephone conversations and exchange of letters - in the last few years, he was exhausted, really worn out; but STILL painted his watercolours, almost to the last day of his life. He slipped away comfortably, I'm told - I really hope he did: I know he was very tired; I'll never forget him - he was the gentlest, kindest, most natural watercolourist I've ever known.
