Hey everyone,
I am just starting my third year of University doing Fine Art and have spent all of summer thinking what to base my work around. I decided that I want to focus around emotional abuse and feeling trapped in a relationship as this is something I have recently gone through myself and I think that it can result in a very powerful body of work. The only issue is...since I have got out of the relationship that inspired this project, I have hit a bit of a wall in terms of thinking what work I can produce. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions of how I can put the feeling of being trapped and being emotionally abused into a painting or drawing...
I understand that this is an odd question to ask but I really want to do this project but feel as though I have perhaps been overthinking it and need a fresh outlook.
Thank you in advance :)

I guess you are going to be a modernist in terms of painting styles, if indeed you are a painter. Possibly not therefore on style I don't know how you will portray it but it sounds like plenty of stuff in your chosen subject to not only vent your anger/disappointment but also after effects. Try trawling google images with the subject matters "trapped, abuse. pain etc and see how it maybe has been handled within artwork.
The classic Munch "Scream" might be a start if it's a painting.

Quite frankly JJ, if you are struggling for ideas at the onset perhaps you should consider another subject.
However, my advice would be to make a start with what ideas you already have, and it's clear that you do have some from your past bad experiences, and then develop them further into paintings as you progress through your term, most artists direct their thought's from one idea to another as they are working on projects, new ideas spring to mind, I certainly do, you will develop new thought's, ideas and inspiration as you work, try it and you will be fine and good luck with the fine art degree.

I can see where you're coming from. However, having had a long long chat with my Uni tutor in my final year about that final assignment, I finished the course using one of his suggestions and got a very pleasing 2-1.
Like Alan, I think if you're already devoid of ideas you're tackling the wrong subject; time for a long chat with your course tutor about what might develop out of your course into a project that has a decent chance of success.
