Hi all, I am trying to identify the artist of my painting I purchased around 40 years ago from an art gallery in Guildford Surrey. Any help much appreciated. Thanks Conroy
The best time to have asked this question was at the time of purchase. This isn’t a great photo of the signature, obviously starting with a W, so perhaps Williams? I can’t attribute this style of painting to any known artist that I’m familiar with, but it looks as though it’s been painted by a ‘competent’ amateur artist.
Some questions about this - IS it a painting, or a print?  It's behind glass, and mounted.  It doesn't look like a watercolour - but it does look like a high-quality print of the type which were popular at the time you purchased it, of an oil painting; and I don't think it's an English artist at all - I can't read the signature, agree with Alan that we need a better photograph of that, but its form is interesting - it looks like a name, followed by a capital M - is that right?  If so, that's a style of signature common in Hungary: but it could just as easily be that you've photographed it upside down (in the last image): in which case it's a W, and the start of the signature: but I still don't think it's English, and my money (had I any....) would be on it being a print of an Eastern European artist's work.  Very competently painted, nice thing to have on the wall, but I doubt you'll have much luck in tracing the painter.
Well I agree that it’s not a watercolour, and I can’t see a gallery framing an oil under glass under any circumstances. So, yes it could be a print Robert, but I would have expected the author of the thread to have either known that or at least stated that fact. But, as we know, not everyone knows how to tell, despite it being quite simple! I thought it looked like an English landscape, the farm gate I suppose but who knows. No buildings or figures for guidance here, it needed both in my opinion!
Thank you so much for replying. The painting did have a label on the back, but its gone missing after moving. I have tried to take some better photos. I believe the painting is oil and pastel. Don't know why when i upload pictures that they change orientation, sorry.
Well that’s a bit clearer and it does appear to be a foreign name, W Pias????? Or W Plas?????. Certainly an unusual combination of medium, the pastel element being the reason it’s been glazed. Can’t help I’m sorry, just enjoy it!

Looks like W.Beavis ... is/was he a British artist? (Sorry if I've replicated the images. Haven't quite got the hang of the page yet!)

I read the start of the surname as Pl  not B! So maybe Plawes or Plewes? Tried a few combinations on google but no luck sorry!
Spent some time searching for this but without success so far (I like puzzles, that's why I've spent time: I'm not that altruistic!). The name seems be either W Bae ... something; or W Plae... something.  I don't suppose either of these mean anything to you?  The only names I can find which bear any similarity to the first bear no resemblance whatsoever to this artists's work; and I couldn't find anyone with the second combination of letters. I did try a Google images search, which very annoyingly came up with 'picture frame' - yes: terribly helpful!  But you might try the same - my present photo-editing software isn't very good, but if you were to crop and straighten the image, leaving out the frame, then pop that into Google images, you MIGHT come up with something.    I will try all that myself later, but for the moment - I want my lunch....
Thank you soooo much for trying to help me. I really do appreciate it and it's been lovely interacting with you all.  BTW I believe the artist was a local Surrey artist, but I'm not really sure about hat. Any way, I prize this painting amongst my favorite things and will go on enjoying it. Again, thanks for your efforts and all the best. Conroy
Thank you for your thank you Conroy.  You are the exception .  Hopefully you will find some info on your picture ...
