I'm always looking at art (mostly illustration) on the web, often I find myself on an Instagram site.  I've read about it and am slightly confused.  Is it just a place to promote and SELL your work?  I have no interest in that.   Are there amateur artists on it (I don't mean amateurs trying to be professionals)?  Or is it a place where people who draw and paint for the fun of it, can interact with others with a similar mindset?  I tried a search for artists like this but got nowhere. Is anybody on Instagram?  If so, what do you think of it?
I'm on it, and I'm pretty sure a few other Forum users also display on Instagram. It's ok (he said, in small letters). You upload your image, make it searchable by using bucketloads of hashtags (20 per image gets regularly touted as the ideal), add some text about how wonderful you are et voila!  Somebody clearly uses the hashtags to search for stuff. I get a few likes on most stuff I post and occasionally a new follower. You don't have to be chasing the Yankee Dollar. Certainly, nobody's turned up offering me attache cases stuffed full of used tenners yet even though the  interweb is full of life hacks about how to make major moolah on Insta. Me, I have a life to be getting on with.
I’m on Instagram, and agree that it is ok. You can be open and allow anyone to follow you, or tie it down a bit and have people ask to follow you. If you leave it open you will get a lot of random followers who are hoping you will follow them back so they have lots of followers. They will not necessarily be artists or interested in your art. I tie it down so my followers are mostly people that I personally know, although I’m happy to have fellow POL people follow me if they want. I would not see it as a selling platform, but that may just be because I’m not trying to sell.
I too am on Instagram, it's a bit like a much tidier and cleaner version of Facebook really. It is for posting pictures rather than all the other stuff that come with Facebook. I post my paintings, sometimes those in progress too, I follow a few artists (I have a specific Facebook and Instagram account for my art only) and a few artists and friends follow me. I don't really use hash tags as I am not bothered about huge exposure. But it gives me my own little gallery space I suppose. 🙂
Thanks Alan, Audrey and Dylan. I'd probably want to limit the use, for the reasons given by Audrey.  I've only encountered Instagram when looking for pictures.  Some have been marked 'private' and I couldn't get at the image.  I don't recall getting the option to follow or obtain permission to follow...presumably you email to get the latter?
You have to have an Instagram account to get the follow option I believe Lewis. No email alerts - I get alerts on the app when someone I follow posts something new.

I have mine open so anyone can follow. But, I only post my art under that name. I have a separate, closed, account under my real name and there I am very picky who can follow and who I will follow. But with my art account I don't really care so much.
I'm a bit of a tart - completely open on Insta so anyone can see, comment and follow.
Thanks for the info, folks.  Very helpful.  Still not sure whether I'll bother.  I'll let the idea stew for a while.
Hi Lewis. Instagram is a smart phone site. One can upload from a PC but a special app is needed. I only say this because in your previous forum comments I think you've said you tend to use the PC. (As do I).
Thanks for that, Ian.  I've decided against joining Instagram.  I tried Facebook but cancelled after about a month.  Receiving prompts about trivia became annoying.  I've tried to drag myself into the 21st Century, but this may be a step too far.
I'm with you Lewis. I have a Twitter but it's pictures / art only. Same with Facebook, of which I've deleted more times than I can remember.
