Hi, I inherited this painting a couple of years back from my mother.  It originally came to the uk from Hamburg, saved when re-locating my grandmother from Hamburg as I really liked it (as a young boy).  I believe it was cleaned up by my parents and then framed.  I would love to know if anyone can shed any light on the artist - I can't make out the name as it's not the clearest signature and google images fails to recognise as a signature in most attempts! Any help would be very greatfully recieved, I've looked many times over the past 3 years and have never been successful!
signature zoomed in...
It’s a  good composition and well structured painting by an artist who understands his art. However the signature zoomed in as you say is completely out of focus.
I  can't make head or tail of the signature - does the "38" indicate the date of its creation, I wonder.  But while I don't know much about Hamburg, other than slightly shocked accounts of the Reeperbahn from a friend who  went there and found his innocent eyes opened, there are docks there, I think?  Of which this might be a painting  - it's not a dock, but may be down-river...  so I would first of all be looking for artists from, or who worked in, Hamburg before the last war.  Which I expect you've already done; or (ditto) contact any art establishments/dealers in Hamburg.  There's a 'g' in the signature, and it looks as if it ends in 'o'....  not a typical ending for a German name.    And  of course - it might have nothing to do with Hamburg at all - but I suggest the answer to your question lies in Germany. Incidentally, have  you removed it from the frame and taken a look at the back?  Even a dealer's mark could help.
This has almost certainly been painted by an amateur hand…therefore, there are literally thousands of possibilities, add no official catalogue or record which doesn’t help. Why do I say that… The buildings on the horizon are too detailed for my liking, and there are boats and stuff sort of scattered throughout making the composition somewhat confusing to my eyes anyway! I do like quite a bit of the foreground brush work and colours though, so there are some good passages within the painting. You haven’t asked for critique, but I thought I’d share a few of my observations… As already stated, the signature is virtually unreadable apart from the obvious date!
We whoever painted it was failure with the subject for sure, and the colour is working in harmony. Does it really matter who it was painted? Robert is on the trail go for it.
Thank you all for the posts, i have indeed searched for hamburg/German painters around the year, but had no luck.  I’ll keep searching as just keen to know more about the artist, another site suggested possibly polish given some letters in the name, but nothing more than that.  Thank you all again, appreciate the responses.

Right way up. Any guesses?
Warriguls?  Not that it helps, because I can't find anyone  of that name, ransack my bookshelves and trouble Google though I have. In response to Alan - yes, I don't think this artist was a professional, but I like his palette and that treatment of the swirl of water in the foreground; take that away and the painting is less interesting: though - I do like it; and I can see why Mr Money does; it's .... just pleasing.  And that'll do for me!
