I have to agree there is life after 70 young Robert , I’m sure you won’t notice the difference from 69.  Your  only as old as you think you are said a friend who in his 90s and  was doing the gardening for the old chap down the road, who I later found out was  68.

Hi, new boy here. I created my website using WordPress. I had very little experience upon setting off on that journey and it's been a steep learning curve. Lots of useful advise online on how to do things. I find, I'm still learning, but like the freedom your own site gives you.

Making a website is more than just coding. Even if you’re dragging and dropping sh*t on Wix with a template: you still need to understand the buyers psychology when they view it. It’s much more than what a template can lay out. If you’re doing it yourself, you don’t know how a website should be structured, how to write content to rank in Google and what order it goes in for the maximum conversation rates. Also, creative web design is another complex aspect to consider. There’s a lot that goes into making a good website vs a good enough website. You need someone who knows what to do to make Google happy.

This thread catalogues a period of change .... my own website ultimately died the death, for many reasons that aren't relevant to the subject; and I'm coming back to the subject because I've found another website provider, with Squarespace; I've thought about giving it a go, but I'm glad I rediscovered this thread because of Chris Bryant's summary (are you still around, Chris?).   It's not just a question of building a site - I daresay one could learn how to do that, with provider support.  But how to structure it; how to get people to visit it when it is built - that's the real issue: I don't want to build a stately home, in short, only to discover that there's no one to pay an entrance fee for the Grand Tour because no one can find it. I don't think I'm going to devote my old age to building a site myself, therefore - but I'd probably take the bait if a website builder dangled it temptingly before me.   So there's an offer - tempt me!
