OK. I'm doing a black and white acrylic painting. Is it best to prep with a white or gray gesso primer?
White gesso is the undercoat for white... Black gesso is the undercoat for black... Try black white gesso mixes for the grey areas...
You will need a mid grey primer in order to be able to see the corresponding halftones that you will be applying, interesting project.
I finished a black and white painting only last week and it went straight onto white canvas board.
Never really thought about putting it on a mid-grey background Alan. I tend to paint first and think later. But I do get your point.
Just as a matter of interest, I used a bright white primed board for a painting I had trouble with, and have put in the seeking advice section of the forum - it was precisely the tonal range that misled me; had I used a grey gesso I suspect I'd have found the whole thing much easier. So of course I agree with Alan's advice, and endorse your good sense in accepting it. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
Well fellas, although I did mine with a white board, next time I may try the mid grey first. Would probably make it much easier!
Like Alan, I would normally put on a thin layer of paint in a mid tone if the board or canvas is already prepared and paint from there always seems to give me the balance i need.
Never even occurred to me - dah!
