I was rooting round in my pastel boxes last weekend, to check for shortages. As I went through various online stores, it struck me how hard pastels seem to be very thin on the ground. I have tended to use Inscribe square types for my pastel underpaintings and lay-ins (I also use them to push soft-pastel around); but am advised that many of them are not lightfast. The problem is, there are few equivalents that match Inscribe's nice chunky handling if you buy the full-length sticks and break em up. You may say, well if it's just for underpainting then why worry....but I don't cover it all up when working over it with slightly softer pastels. Conte sticks are ok but very skinny and difficult to lightly skim over a nice surface like PastelMat (Inscribes do this very nicely). Daler used to make hard pastels but they seem to have gone now. Winsor and Newton made quite hard pastels but they've been discontinued...I'm gathering them up off Ebay when I can afford to. Has anyone tried any particular makes that they feel are hard enough to use as a base for softer pastels? I currently use Daler-Rowney and Unison softs
