A lot of American pastellists use the close-framing method (i.e no mountboard) and use framespacers between their glass and the pastel-painting. This seems rather an attractive option; besides cutting out the cost of the mountboard, it would also mean (a) a smaller frame and thus reduced cost; (b) smaller piece of glass and (c) there's no mountboard to get speckled with stray pastel-dust. Nothing more aggravating than framing up your work, only to have to take it apart again because of stray specks on the nice pristine-white or cream mountboard. Does anyone in the UK sell frame-spacers? I haven't seen any of the main suppliers with them so far. Does anyone here use this method?
