polite enquiry. has anyone actually sold art on here. i have held back placing any canvases or large pieces as i wonder if this is just yet another site that promises and does not deliver. honest question and please don't give rude answers. i sell work via commission mostly. I am loathed to set up a payment for no results.
Polly why do you expect people to be rude ?  I actually don't know the answer to your question as I have never put my work on here.  You could enquire from the office,  a lady called Dawn Farley would  probably be able to help, you.   The number is on the site...somewhere.

I bought a painting from someone on this site, so at least one person has sold something.
Polly - I've no real idea whether I've sold directly from this site - I don't offer work here, just show it sometimes.  I get sales elsewhere, now and then: but who knows what led customers to me - might have been from here, might not. But in any event, the site is free - you aren't going to be risking anything by showing your work on the Gallery (whose only snag is that pieces get shunted off the front page so fast, since so many people contribute to it).   You don't have to pay anything here, so you're not risking anything.  I think the site offers exposure - how useful that is commercially is something else again: we don't always (ever?) know what drew our work to people's attention.  However, I certainly wouldn't regard POL as primarily a selling site - you really have to pay for inclusion on those, and I've found that very few of them deliver.
Robert, I believe that you do have to pay a small fee in order to offer your work for sale! This fee also gives you access to a variety of other things such as the e-newsletters, videos, years of back issues etc etc… It’s called Studio Membership, if I’m not mistaken it costs £25 a year, so hardly a King’s ransom! I don’t particularly offer my work for sale on here, there are better platforms - but I have been approached numerous times and made sales. I also picked up a very lucrative commission from a London based PR company.

Polly, you can’t actually mark your items for sale in the galleries on POL until you take out a subscription. This means the item will be flagged as ‘for sale’ and you can indicate a price. Doing this then allows people to search for items being sold as a search filter, (as opposed to just being displayed). Having said that I’ve got a few items marked this way, but have never sold a thing.   Addendum after Alan posted the same thing.. I pay £4.50 a month and Leisure Painter magazine is posted to my door and I can access The Artist electronically along with access to archives of both plus all the newsletters etc.

Well, I have learned something to start the day with - far be it from me to suggest, though, that a fee is hardly worth paying given the rate of churn on the Gallery.  I've never tried to sell here (obviously!) so didn't know that:  I subscribe to The Artist: maybe that's why the Work for Sale? box shows on my account. Many things are beyond me.  This has been just another one of them.
Thanks folks. And the trouble is with the internet these days (why I said please don't be rude) is that no matter what say, you seem to offend someone. Sensible, friendly answers and seems fair to use the site as a showcase. Happy Halloween 😌😈👻💀🎃
Look forward to seeing your stuff Polly
You can see all the benefits of a Studio membership here https://www.painters-online.co.uk/membership/ We don't get directly involved in sales of work - means no commisssion if you do sell - just offer the facility to do so.
Polly - we have moderators, we're very anxious not to be rude - many of us will have seen so many forums (especially on Facebook) killed off by unpleasant comments,  so I do understand what you meant.   And Dawn, who has responded above (probably; she has other little helpers) keeps the site clean and healthy, with volunteer help.  Whether you'll sell here - well; that's probematic; and you might never know what drove people to you - but it's a safe space, and an honest one: and as I'm sure you know, there aren't too many of those.
I Have Never tried to sell on this site, only on some others... I can tell you from years of experience, that promoting art on social media does not lead to sales.. It just doesn't... I like to share my work on this site and some others, but I quit Facebook years ago and I left Twitter as soon as Elon Musk took it over.. I never liked Instagram or Reddit.. I tried them but not anymore... I think the best we can do, is make business cards, talk to friends, family, strangers, direct them to your sales sites and hope for the best.. Promote where you can, but Social Media is a waste of time.. Millions of Artist, no matter their Skill have stumbled down the Social media rabbit hole with nothing to show..
