I was recently asked to produce an article for the Studio member’s monthly newsletter and the Tips and Techniques section here. Mine was called Painting In a Heatwave (2022) which seemed appropriate in the present hot weather.   I have this morning read two really good and instructive articles in the T & T section,  Learning to Draw One Line at a Time by Claudia Myatt and How To Paint Blossoms in oils and acrylics by Valerie Pirlot. Both authors encourage Plein air work in drawing and painting, and Claudias suggestion of using a folding ruler to aid perspective is intriguing! There is another by Liz Chadderton on How to Paint a Green Iguana.  These are the first four on the section. There is at the end of each article a box for comments as with work in the Gallery. I’m not entirely surprised that there are no comments on mine, but there are none on any of these four!  I’m not normally a Studio Member (though kindly given a free membership for a while by Dawn for taking part in this) so I guess I wouldn’t normally be able to see this, but it begs the question which I have used as the title of this topic!  Are you a Member? Do you read this section? Whilst we are unable to upload pictures on the Forum, perhaps this is an opportunity to look at other sections of POL. I must admit that I rarely look further that the Forum and the Gallery, and was surprised what I found.

I always read the monthly newsletter that Dawn puts out for members, I’ve been a member since the start!  In fact, I’ve got two articles, WIP’s in fact, coming up in July and September, both exploring mixed media and the benefits of using tinted paper… Yes, I do occasionally dip into the T&T section, and leave comments if I find an article interesting - but probably not often enough, no particular reason for that!

I think we are largely creatures of habit aren’t we?  It took me a while to find the Forum, and longer still to join in. Incidentally when Dawn wrote asking me to do this, she attached an article of yours as an example of ‘how to’.
Did she now… well, I hope it helped a little!  I’ve probably done several dozen of these features since first being asked - the first one took me an age to get right…  but it was good grounding for my articles in The Artist… that is why Sally approached me, she does read them and liked my clear style of writing, as well as my artwork I assume! Rarely, if ever, have I had any comments or feedback… perhaps the occasional comment!
Well I did read yours and several others to get a feel of other articles written, and I had in fact produced a previous one about maybe five years ago. Ah well, onward and upward. I’m looking forward to your still life article/s Alan.
I always read the tips and techniques section. There are some great articles and plenty to learn from.
True Denise. There’s a lot of good stuff to find on POL beyond the Gallery and Forum that I think most of look at regularly.
I'm not a Studio member, because it costs money and I make Scrooge before his transformation seem like an open-handed scattercash (a Scots term, I understand: but in terms of sheer tight-fistedness, no Scot has the edge on me).  However, I do look at other parts of this site, including the techniques area - and have very occasionally commented.   Learning however that participation has led to Alan receiving the approving eye of Dr Sally Bulgin, I may think again....
Aha, dimly I wondered which Sally was mentioned! Interesting.  I also decided I didn’t want to pay any extra Robert, as not trying to sell here, but having free access to studio until the end of the year, maybe I should give it a whirl! That’s another point for discussion. Has anyone had success selling via Studio?
I enjoy Studio Tessa but I've never tried selling anything there. I like having the back issues of both magazines at hand when I want them. The articles and tutorials are very good.
I’m going to have a better look at it all Denise. If I remember rightly we all had a free trial At the beginning, but I didn’t take it further when that expired.

I’m sure that she has a watch on many of us who post on the gallery. You need some good hi-tech equipment, my Nikon DSLR camera wasn’t cheap, but the magazine is printed at 300dpi, so I have to send over large hi-res files.  It’s handy to have access and a sound working knowledge of Photoshop as well, to make your colours corrections and so on… I already had my 21in iMac, it’s very fast and great for DTP -  also the screen has been calibrated for colour correctness - what I see on the screen is exactly how it will print in the magazine!
