I very recently started trying out digital painting as a way of getting my ideas across. I have only done around 5 digital paintings so far, some have been shocking, some ok. This is my latest one, I did it today at college. I don't know what to think, as I haven't done many as of yet. But I have bought a book on digital painting, which should be here soon, and I thrive to get better and learn from you guys. Any advice will be much appreciated.

I think you are getting on ok, maybe a tinted background would make it more striking

I don't as yet do digital - other than mucking about with Paint, which isn't the same thing by a long chalk. Maybe put your work on the Gallery as well, though, because it's possible that our digital artists,of which we have several, don't visit the Forum pages, or don't do so very often.

Hello - it's very refreshing to have a contribution from a member who is interested in digital painting. Yes your 'Eye' is good for an early attempt using a new medium. You've captured the basic form of the eyeball with nicely graduated shading. Also you've placed detail in the iris very well. the only features which don't work well are the eyelashes but corrective work on those is easy in digital work. It's an unusual subject to choose and I'm wondering if it was set by your tutor - if so it was not a very imaginative of him/her. I would be able to offer more constructive advice if you could tell me what software you were using. If you did this at college were you using Corel Painter on a desktop or laptop or were you using a digital tablet like iPad. Corel Painter is a huge complicated bit of software and I've found it very difficult to use. On the iPad I prefer to use Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. Autodesk was one of the first digital programs developed primarily for producing plans and working drawings for architects. The other software I like is Procreate. Once you are familiar with those you won't want to change to any other. I don't know what book you have ordered but I've found 'iPad for Artists' very useful. I bought it in the National Gallery bookshop for £10. Hope you've found these comments helpful. Look forward to hearing from you again soon.

The eye is quite good... may I suggest - the whites are a little muddy (unless she's meant to be in deep shade?) Most people have the whites visibly white/creamy coloured even from a goodly distance away. I played with it to see how it'd look with whiter whites - but, sorry, it highlights the short-cuts you used (the eyeball is in front of the lashes and skin) - I apologise for that. The work is good - but now you also need to think about the order of things.
