I looked at last night programme, I've watched every one in the series so far. My impression of the regional winners chosen so far is that painters are less likely win if they paint in a representational style. Has anybody any views on this ?
I havn't watched last night's episode yet, will catch up later. My overall impression of the programme and in particular the contestants is that this is by no means a selection of the best artist's in the UK by a long way. However, the selection process of sending in a jpeg image, the usual method nowadays of course, has found some of the artist's lacking when it came to the crunch and I don't personally think they were up to the challenge. In other words, out of their comfort zone regarding subject matter and the 4-hour time restraint, and I have generally been disappointed in the results so far, many works unfinished. If you can't complete a work in 4-hours you shouldn't apply to be on the programme, I know I'm a quick painter but I usually spend about two hours on a large canvas, any longer and I start fiddling and placing in useless detail. I must confess that I hadn't particularly noticed any trend in figurative style work being edged out, but it is very likely the case.

Who are the judges? It's usually far more important to know that than to know who the contestants are.
I know of Schierenberg - I doubt that he would veer away from representational art, the other two mean very little to me. At least they're not celebrity judges, though I should have preferred a panel of artists - however, it's a bit immaterial as a) I haven't entered the competition, b) I wouldn't enter the competition, c) I don't have Sky, d) I don't want Sky - tee hee..... I would hope the contestants had a fair chance to prove themselves, that's all ... agree with you about the 4 hours: I don't know if I could complete a work in that time now for purely physical reasons, but provided you're reasonably fit and don't have to stop for a sit down 'cause yer back's gorn every 20 minutes, which describes me to a nicety, this should be perfectly feasible and just requires the ability to manage your time and plan what you're going to do: apart from anything else, just getting on with it is the best way I know of avoiding overworking and losing focus. A tentative and over careful painting by someone frightened of making mistakes is very unlikely to win any competition if the judges are even basically competent. I wish the poor devils luck, anyway - even though it all feels a bit like Masochism to me - Big Brother, with added Linseed oil.....
