While you have a chance, keen oil painters all, take a look at Gerald Massey's latest painting on the Gallery - it has sparked a slight difference between Crispian Oates (an observant critic) and myself which I find rather interesting; Crispian thinks the painting would benefit from greater tonal contrast to imbue some excitement to the work; and I, broadly, don't - there's nothing very crucial about this, we all see things in different ways and I don't think either of us is right or wrong, but it would be interesting to know what others make of a picture which, tucked away a few pages back, is in danger of being overlooked because it doesn't scream at you: I like quiet paintings, in my old age, I suspect - anyway, the painting is worth more of a look and comment than it's so far received.
