Just as well we are all different, nothing like that inspires me at all.   A colour ,a shape a piece of music...yes.
Quite prepared, Sylvia, to accept that you're a law unto yourself - 'cause so am I.  I don't think those facts will surprise anyone on POL, somehow... I've had a quick look at Renso art - my initial impression is that this is a rather slick set of results, which I do associate with some US painters; and don't always much appreciate.  However, that's a very quick reaction - there are videos of 2 hours plus duration, and it's too early in the morning for me to sit still through that (not least because I've got to give the painkillers a chance to kick in: nothing prejudices you against something like a bad back, hips etc.  By the way - oh dear, off he goes on a diversion again - I had bad cramping in the early hours: looked it up when I'd begun to get over it to find that night cramps are common in the elderly, but the reason isn't always discoverable: or in other words, you're just old.  Very helpful; a warm towel helps, they say - JUST the sort of thing you're going to be getting ready when you're unable to put the weight on your feet to hobble to the bathroom). Right now then - it's either back to bed for a bit, or I paint a magpie I saw helping himself to the last of the figs this week..... I'll watch one of those Renso art vids later on.   It's a full and busy life...
Magpie Robert....I've got on strike hens to feed
But why do people watch other people being creative their way?   Any demos I have been to I usually go to sleep behind my eyes.    To me being creative is all about how you do it...not how you are told how to do it...  ok tips and techniques  I understandb. I love a group of people all in the same space looking at the same model, the same view and every single painting is differen, that is creativity. Though give the guy his due Bob Ross he could create money.

Renso inspired me.
Well, thanks for looking Robert. Hope your problems ease this morning, at least so you can paint.  Back to Renso. I must admit, I hardly watch anything on YouTube, but now I see flaws in Renso’s work. Guess I  am just used to other artists who I appreciate.  Love Jenny Saville now, amongst others. Just bought a print of Terry Rushworth’s work. I like the way his stuff almost looks like decoupage. The piece is called Intermission.
Robert, when I get cramp in my hands I hold a bar of soap for about 5 or 10 minutes.  I read about a lady who put a bar of soap under the bedsheet to help her husband who suffered from night cramps. She said that it works. While I am here, thank you for the many snippets of information that you distribute on the forum. Best wishes.
I think we all have different "inspires". So be it.
Right then - I've watched most of the Renso art video; not quite all, because I was nodding off (not his fault, it reflects my disturbed night - cramps in both legs: I hate being woken up by that, because you just know that horrible though it is, it's going to get much worse before it gets better). This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EEiNe70ZrA&t=254s&ab_channel=RensoArt It's worth a look.  Comments I would make - he's going for a very close resemblance to his photograph; a lot closer than I'd want to get; he's using, somewhat surprisingly, Winton oil paint - the basic range from Winsor and Newton; I would struggle with that... it's a beginner's paint, used in a professional's technique; though I know a lot of professional artists use Winton, or Daler-Rowney's Georgian: not sure they all tell their clients that.  He has, if anything, feminized the already feminine - his model looks like an intelligent, capable young woman (so far as you can ever divine these things from the face) while his painting rather emphasizes other aspects - hard to explain what I mean, see what you think; I find her a bit over-polished, primped and primed, but that's more a matter of taste than anything else.  Good idea to work on a neutral grey canvas - I stopped watching at around 2 hours; I think he's got the mouth a bit wrong, and that's where the problem lies which he identifies himself; the mouth is certainly the bit I always get wrong - a bit more dark in the upper lip in this case would have resolved that; it's so frustrating to see him hover around the area, knowing something is off, but not actually identifying it.  Always easy to see these things in someone else's painting, nearly always impossible to see them in one's own. Anyway - as an inspiration, guide, mentor or whatever, you could do a lot worse, but I don't think this degree of realism, or the attempt to achieve it, is something most of us would want to do; I could well be wrong.... there are other YouTube painters who could offer more practical help and I think help you achieve a more characterful result.  I'd be interested to know what others think, though.
Yes, I think he does get vey close to his photographs, though one must know this is not an easy fete.  Renso seems to always use what is available on the cheap, and so disregarding the ‘Bob Ross’ connotations. I suspect his other work, not from photograph's, is as good, especially when he takes more time. You can learn from his way, though I do know you are an avid believer this is not good practice, and not a way forward, Robert. Needless to say, if something inspires me I can paint it, good enough to be talked about by others. Whatever artistic route you take must suit you.  Renso has been called a master many times… personally, I think they are right
The above picture was painted by distorting photographs and real life. It’s called, The Money Makers. I don’t think I will ever finish it. It just doesn’t interest me. Reckon I’ll stick with my portraits from photo, be Renso- esque, so to speak. I think I’m developing into something distinctly me, hopefully.
Robert, cramp is often resolved by quinine, prescribed by a GP, although readily available in one's gin and tonic.
