A little bit early, but here is the next challenge for anyone who'd like to take part. September is traditionally back-to-school month and, despite everything, it looks as though 2020 won't be the exception after all. So for this month the challenge is to paint a memory from school days - good or bad!

Ah yes, the time of year I dreaded 60 years ago - return to Bash Street Elementary, twinned with Wormwood Scrubs .... the evil Mrs Arnold, just waiting for us all, poor little victims..... Don't think one bitter, of course......... I'm sure Lew could do a wonderful caricature of the feral old dragon, but I don't have any photographs as evidence .....

An interesting challenge. Those of us in the prime of life might have some gruesome memories. I've been down this road before, a year or so back I made a tome about growing up. So here I am in 'here's one I did earlier' mode. I touched on school life a few times...this is one of the pages. It's all true. Life was a little different nearly 70 years ago. Most of us kids were scared of the teachers...these days, in some schools, I think it's the other way round.
The strange language is me trying to write like an 11 year old London kid.
I'll have a go at this one. I'm trying to get used to gouache at the moment, I'll have a shot with that.

I'm sure Lew could do a wonderful caricature of the feral old dragon, but I don't have any photographs as evidence .....Oh Robert, I could provide you with a photograph, our dragon was a Miss Wilkinson, a right old battle-ax who walked around with a ruler in her hand to wrap your knuckles, needless to say I hated early school days, Ormesby County Infants School, not very happy memories only a lovely lady called Mrs Richardson who told my mum I would go to Art School one day, I liked her 😁

Nice work, Lewis. have you ever tried gouache on black card or paper, it does take some getting used to but the end result positively shines out.
I only ever had one incident that I vividly remember, and it was when at the infant school. The class was painting an Easter scene on a very long strip of paper, the length of the classroom. We had our own little section to paint, to my young eyes I thought the sky was being painted, by others, too pale, so into the poster paint pot went my brush and on to the paper it went, I was very happy with the result, until the teacher saw it, scolded me and took me out into the hall, and there I cried. Later I was allowed to cover my bit of blue sky with a large fluffy bit of cotton wool, which I wasn't happy doing, and a few more larger clouds were added to even the skyscape. I'll always remember the teacher words on doing so 'Oh! that looks more natural with different sized clouds'
Bit of a metaphor there, if you are happy with your 'bit of blue sky' don't let anyone take it away :)
On the whole I was very happy to attend school, at every stage. I'll have a rummage through the old photo's see what I can find.

Thank you CJ. No, I haven't tried gouache on black paper. I'll have to get some. I'm still finding out what I can and can't do with gouache.
That teacher sounds like a full-bore martinet. What a thing to scold you over! I enjoyed the last two or three years of schooling, the rest was a bit iffey.
