I have what looks like an original painting and I am not sure of the artist, title or value. If anyone can enlighten me, I would appreciate it. I have attached a photo of the painting. Measurements 24 X 36 in. Thank you so much. RH

Too much glare to read the signature - what do you make of it? It looks familiar, because there were many Victorian paintings in this genre - whether it's an original or a copy is very hard to tell; try taking a photograph of the back of it, which often tells us at least as much as a front view (sometimes more). There's a rather worrying difference between the painting of the woman's hand and the flesh tones in the rest of the painting, as though the whole thing has been cleaned too enthusiastically: but that may just be a function of the lighting. Couldn't begin to assess value, I'm afraid - you just can't tell that sort of thing from a screen-shot like this. If you want a valuation, an auction house is your best bet.
If you're still about - please take the picture outside, turn off the flash on your camera, take another shot of the signature as well as of the painting, take another of the back of the canvas and frame - as Syd correctly says, there's just too little information here unless one of us just happened to recognize the image: which, given the tens of thousands of genre paintings in the world, really is pretty unlikely.
Hm. Well, $100 is neither here nor there, is it? I'd be inclined to hang on to it until (and if) you can find out more. Do take a photo of the back - at the moment, it's not clear whether this is an old painting, or a modern knock-off. Is it framed - presumably so; let's have sight of that too, but the real clues will lie in a shot of the reverse. All that valuation tells you is that the house thinks it could make a profit on the purchase at that price, but doesn't have any greater confidence in it than $100 worth. Not very helpful.....
