Your original question Philippa, as to what Abstract art is about almost answers itself just because it needs defining. Its main quality is its difference in being outside the norm of art creation. Please don't think I dislike abstract art, I dont, I often wander into it myself and it isn't something you can define as one item/method, way etc. It's what you want it to be without needing a title or description. In other words, it's left to the individual viewing it to decide what they see..........I think. (-:
