This is an early stinker - before I learned how to paint foliage, or realized that an air-raid shelter might not be the ideal subject for a composition.  It may appear on its side - something about the way I saved the image made it un-editable.  
There you go. It’s not that bad.. I quite like the air raid shelter .

Perhaps not a complete disaster but it certainly didn't work.  I was experimenting with gold acrylic and painting knives.  Like Robert there seems to be something stopping me getting the image the right way up!

I guess we all have expectations when we start a painting, and sometimes we don't travel far along that path before we know it'll be a duffer.  As Tony said we lose our enthusiasm for it.  I think I'd gone too far with mine, but everybody else's look OK to me. Steve's painting looks like a goer, and I like Robert's air-raid shelter painting.  Maybe it's the illustrator side of me at play.  Imagine an illustrated story about Loose Lily and Wayward Wayne.  She phones him and says 'Meet you at the air-raid shelter at 3pm'  He gets to Robert's picture, and says, 'This must be the place, we won't be disturbed here.'  (Obviously, they were looking for somewhere for a quiet game of dominos.) I barely use oils or acrylic, but rightly-or-wrongly, I imagine you can just keep going.  But if the enthusiasm's gone, as Tony said, you might as well start thinking about the next painting.    Dixie uses water based mediums as I do, these are unforgiving and probably result in more false starts than our oil/acrylic using friends.  That said, at least Gouache provides a chance to completely rework an image.  (If you think it's worth it.)
Actually I can see why you don’t think it’s worked .  The tonal values are all very similar and it’s a bit like a Chameleon.  Steve....these forums do get intertwined on occasion .

I gave up on this one . I wanted delicate but not wishy washy. An attempt at an evening scene, best viewed in the dark, I think
Tried an underwater view. I quite like the frogman and the background but the rest is a bit gaudy, wish I'd kept the monochrome though out.
Some of these so called disasters are actually quite good and some of parts of others are particularly good and well painted .
I completely get the notion that we all have our own reasons why something hasn't worked.  Others see things differently, this thread is interesting for that alone.  All three of CJ's look worth pursuing to me, I particularly like the undersea painting.  CJ thinks it gaudy.  The colours of tropical underwater-scapes are gaudy.  This appeals to me because the colour is bright.  We have these wonderful vivid colours at our disposal and seldom use them fully.  Just a personal view of course.
