Interesting theory in tThe Guardian today - “ Tour de Force” - Van Gogh’s cypress trees “ inspired by the Eiffel Tower”. Yes, I can see it, why not?
How can they know what they represent without asking him? Maybe they just represent ….  Cyprus trees!  He certainly liked using them! But who knows! Mind you I haven’t read the article yet!
Yes…who knows? We all have our opinions….
Oh .... bugger the Guardian, frankly....  Did van Gogh even see the Eiffel Tower?  Was he impressed by it or monumentally (sic) indifferent?  Who the Hell can possibly know?   Apologies, one is in a crabby mood.  But I do dislike art critics' unfounded belief that they can delve into the minds of artists - you can't, you horridly hideous hacks, because you're not artists and you never will be. There.  I feel better for that.  Back to my nice bottle of Sangiovese Primitivo, with the accent on the primitivo.

Marjorie Firth on 27/03/2023 16:21:25 Und ja, aber warum?  Et oui, mais pourquoi?  In various iterations - why not?  That could just as well be why?, couldn't it?   No, stop it, you're just being a bad tempered old man - (that's me, not you: you're not an old man or bad tempered.  All the same!  How can a Guardian critic, of all critics, suppose he or she can delve into the mind of van Gogh?) I expect I'll have calmed down nicely by tomorrow......  Just pay NO attention: we are easily irritated, here at the Batcave, especially by the Guardian.
😂🍷🍷🍷good drop of wine, that primitivo….

Maybe Eiffel was inspired by a Cyprus tree....................
Yes!
Good thought Peter, I like that!
Hang on - now hold hard - let us get a grip.  The Eiffel Tower was built, or finished anyway, in 1887.  Vincent van Gogh died in 1890.  When did he paint his cypress trees?  The first one to provide a comprehensive answer wins this week's star prize, which I shall invent when I have a moment. Do we know if Vincent v G ever SAW the Eiffel Tower?  I shouldn't be surprised if he did, but - God this is so deeply daft, isn't it? I know I spoke from the depths of old man's doolally on this earlier, and possibly - we must be honest - a nice glass or three of Sangiovese Primitivo MAY, I only say may, had made its contribution.  But delving into the inspiration of artists, when,  let us be honest - you don't have a solitary single clue and anyway would you WANT to get into the mind of poor old Vincent? ... is a little foolish; and a lot presumptuous, patronizing, belitting and...... and breathe............ you're getting angry again.
Gas and air required here please.
Apropos of not much, it's Cypress trees not Cyprus, and they are almost identical to cedar trees in shape and colour. These are also mentioned quite a lot in Lebanon in the Old Testament. Bit before Vincent's time. (-: Amen.
