I've got a question for you all. I've been using MDF sheets with canvas glued to them; I never expected them to mimic the feel of stretched canvas, and of course they don't. But I've been slightly surprised to find how much I have to struggle with them - partly I think because the canvas doesn't have a strong weave. Do you find you have strong preferences for one surface over another, or that it affects your ability, significantly, to achieve a reasonable result? Is surface just something to which we ought to be able to adapt, no matter what it is? Or does it perhaps affect the end result almost more than anything else - in watercolour, acrylic, oil - or anything else? For myself, I think I can tackle most things on stretched canvas - but am by no means so confident on alternative surfaces.
