I have a lovely big fat, squirrel haired filbert brush that son number one bought for me over twenty years ago. I have used it and enjoyed it , looked after it and it always comes with me on painting expeditions. I also have a plastic tube that holds my brushes and a large square of coloured cotton cloth . The tube has carried my brushes over many miles and into many countries the filbert brush also lives in it. My coloured cloth I put on the floor when I work outside, I put all the items I am using onto it. It keeps them safe and together . I acquired my cloth in Malawi and it has travelled throughout several African countries . I can sit on it I can wear it ( see profile pic) it has kept the sun off me and been used as a pillow. So my three item I would never be without , my brush , my plastic tube and my African cloth. Do you have favourite art items...and what are they ?

My old favourites are my two porcelain Watercolour mixing dishes a slant / round well one and a daisy shape one. Ive had them decades and they are dead easy to clean , no dirty corners and no viridian type stains and made to last . They are lovely objects too....Syd

A briefcase (a relic from working days) which holds all my 'travelling' watercolour equipment and my old smelly rag which I use to wipe brushes, smear paint around, blot washes etc, and frighten off over-the-shoulder on-lookers.
My Jacksons black hog brushes are my favourites. But perhaps they come second after my husband who makes me laugh - priceless! It must be the Irish Blarney!
A large wooden case of watercolour paints gifted to me by my now departed Grandma when her dementia was getting so bad she could no longer concentrate on painting. Inside are notes on colour mixing in her own hand, it makes me smile every time I see her handwriting. I'd never lifted a pencil or brush until she gave me her art materials (a huge cache) 18 months ago and I started to play about... and I now know painting will be part of my life forever. Great Grandma painted before her and it's so special to me that I might be carrying on a family trait, one I had no idea I could 'do'. The materials came to me at a time when I was really struggling with certain things and have been endlessly therapeutic. Every time I open the case I feel a sense of belonging and everything feels 'just so'. It was almost as if Grandma handed me a great gift, more than just a few colours. Also, my collection of fox cups I use to stand my paintbrushes in. I do love a cup with a fox on.
That reminds me - I designed a set of commemorative mugs a while back and I still have a set. I use them for holding my brushes and other painting equipment - wouldn't be without them.
My Star Wars apron....
Two very old brushes (numbers 11 and 12) from the days long ago when the firm I worked for had an art department. My problem isn't having favourite things, but being unable to throw things away or get rid of them. I have a total load of brushes, pens, pencils etc, that I'll never use, A caligraphy set, a Japanese painting set, more than fifty part used paint tubes and can't stop buying pads of 300gsm paper (currently have five with 12 sheets each) . To make it worse, the grandkids gave me £35 gift vouchers for The Works at Christmas Day. Whatever shall I spend them on......? Oh, and five folders of paintings and four sketch books plus a pocket one......and a partridge in a pear tree........(-:
