When I am experimenting with ideas, designs, materials or techniques I use old photograph albums. I find them unused in my local charity book shop for very little money., they have beautiful quality thick paper and the lovely tissue paper in-between which can be used as tracing paper. They are so reasonably priced that I don't worry about experimenting freely with different materials. Occasionally and frustratingly the experiment is better than the actual painting! This is my first posting on the Forum so I am hoping that everything works!
Looks like a very good idea will have to have a look at my local charity shops.
Welcome to the forum Jill, good idea to recycle old albums etc.
Jill, that’s an excellent idea, thank you for sharing it.
Yes Jill, a novel and very sensible idea.   I'll look out for some.  Trouble is, my family know I love sketch books and I got three beauties for Christmas. Another similar idea that appeals is one used by an illustrator I like.  He buys old books from junk shops, they are usually old law books and things of that ilk.  Often they are leather bound, so apart from the content, they are lovely things.  Using thick brush pens, he sketches over the text...the strong dark lines really stand out.  An odd-ball idea that appeals to me. But your photo album idea is more practical.
Good idea... I have a couple sitting empty on a shelf .

Now that is an idea that appeals to me too. I love my sketch books. One for holidays, one for the garden and a small one I take on walks. Usually pen and wash sometimes a pencil. Shame I missed the daily art for January, there again we have had the flu then our visitor....funnily enough from Dumfries and Galloway which was mentioned so time has been at a premium.
Love your sketch Karren, I also like your idea of a separate sketchbook for different topics.
A good idea, Karren, and also, an equally great look inside your sketch book. Is that the place you live, regarding the text above your watercolour building, if so, no wonder you have the inkling to make good use of everyday objects.
