Some of you may be interested to know that Tim Benson has moved up to Chairman of ROI (or is it President?) and Adibanji Alade is now Vice. Dawn has just informed me - I hadn't seen this flagged up myself, but it may be of some interest if you didn't already know, which some of you will already know of course.

Hi Alan, yes Tim has been Vice President for the last five years and is now President. Adebanji is now Vice President. Exciting times, I’m sure they’ll both do a great job for the society! :-)

Hi David, ROI is the acronym for the Royal Institute of Oil painters. Members can use the post-nominal letters ROI after their name. The Federation of British Artists (based at the Mall Galleries, London) comprises eight of the UK's leading art societies including the ROI. The others are... RBA (Royal Society of British Artists) NEAC (New English Art Club) RI (Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours) RP (Royal Society of Portrait Painters) RSMA (Royal Society of Marine Artists) PS (The Pastel Society) SWLA (Society of Wildlife Artists) You can find out more about the ROI on the website which is here... www.theroi.co.uk You can also follow us on Instagram! Anyone can enter work into our annual open exhibition at the Mall Galleries. Selection takes place in two phases, the first is digital and then paintings which make it through the first stage are sent down to the Mall Galleries to be seen by the selection panel. Competition for places in the exhibition is pretty fierce. For anyone who is unsure whether to enter I'd say it's a good idea to come and visit the show first. This year it opens on 28th November and closes at 1.00pm on the 9th December. Thanks for the link Haidee-Jo. I will actually give it a shot this year. It's only a small entry fee and you just never know. An old college friend of mine had a work accepted some years ago, and it sold on the first day. I've got a couple of possible oils in mind, chances are less than slim but one never knows what the judges are looking for.

Thanks girls, I will be submitting two oil paintings. I've been working on a couple of large industrial landscapes which are nearing completion, 28 x 32in on stretched canvas, I'll give them a try. Selection, as Haidee-Jo points out is fierce, but it's always worth a try. My expectations of being selected aren't high so I won't be disappointed. Even if selected via the initial digital image, that's only the first hurdle, the actual work has to be delivered to London and is then subjected to a second selection procedure.

Alan I would recommend that you try a smaller one as well... space is pretty limited so small ones seem to get chosen more frequently from the selection than large ones - if you think about it more work from different artists can be shown that way. Good luck!

Thanks HJ, yes, I see your point. I've got a couple of 25 x 60cm oils which are a bit different, I could give them a try as well. It's a while before deadline so let me mull it over. I will probably end up submitting four anyway.
