You like pondering the imponderable, Gudrun. It probably, just like art itself, means different things to different people.
Because I do most things from imagination, I draw rapid sketches to get an idea how I want things to look. I think of these as scribble sketches, they take moments to draw. Sadly, they are sometimes more lively than the more finished drawings I make from them.
These scribble sketches are binned when the page I draw them on is full.
I draw in sketchbooks. These are slightly more finished than the scribble sketches. I think of them as doodles. I have lots of sketchbooks full of them. They sometimes are used as ideas for ‘finished’ drawings.
I have some better quality sketchbooks, I use them for more ‘finished’ drawings.
In fact none are finished, I can always fiddle about a bit more. Endlessly, if I’m inclined. So, nothing is finished, I’ve just STOPPED drawing them.
I hope that’s suitably confusing.

I’m rarely looking to achieve anything more than exaggerated scribbles in my sketchbook - rapid and loose is what I’m aiming for.
I’ll occasionally take a bit more time and care on some subjects, I just go with the flow so to speak! Let’s be honest, nobody will ever see them apart from yourself…
The idea is to use some in their entirety, or more often selected components taken from these sketchbooks for finished paintings at some point in time… albeit only a fraction of what I ‘churn out’ will ever get used!
Stillman & Birn is my choice of sketchbooks. They have a great range but I generally try and avoid anything spiral bound.
This is a really rapid scribble…I’ve got hundreds of similar pieces - parked up and drawn from the front seat of my car with a pen.
They don’t come much rougher than this, but there’s enough information recorded to be of some use later.

What I find mystifying is how the art ‘market’ works - and how hugely talented artists get overlooked for stuff that isn’t well done or is very derivative. I guess you have to be in with the ‘right’ people! I’ve seen this item today on what looks to be a very reputable gallery website - £1200 for a print of what’s basically a copy of Whistlejacket! (Here, if you’re interested:

But if you’re only in it for the money is it art at all or just decoration…. and .compared to the price of a new bathroom it’s still not very much.

Art is an expression solidified by your medium. The more creative the expression with a dangling string for others to adhere and understand or enjoy, the more successful will be your piece. It can hold peoples thoughts and bring out their true feelings, a reaction, good or bad. The recognition of art distinguishes us from animal. Computers cannot replicate human creativity and all its good and perhaps bad qualities, but they can trick us that they do. Need I go on with philosophy? That cornerstone of human life would be hard to complete in a lifetime. A little more… Art is a celebration,a memory that can quantify. The dark ages proved this. Art is progression. Fashion. Sexual. Horrific. Art is good for the beholder and the creator. Nuff said!
