Visited the Laing Art GalleryNewcastle) today. Super exhibition on at the moment - portraits and self portraits etc.  Thought you might be interested in Norman Cornish’s self portrait ( on left) and another by Karl Hagedorn, painted in 1915, which I liked very much.

That sounds really good Marjorie. I’m a big fan of Norman Cornish, but Newcastle is a bit far for me! I’ll look it up online.

And re the restricted palette eg Zorn, it’s interesting to read that L.S. Lowry ( who often painted in the N. E. of England) famously used only 5 colours in his painting. He is quoted as saying “I am a simple man and I use simple materials, Ivory Black, Vermillion, Prussian Blue, Yellow Ochre and Flake White with no thinning material…” This was from the newsletter produced by The Friends of the Laing Art Gallery. I think I may be entering a period of simplicity in painting, it’s got a lot going for it!😁 And, today, it was so lovely to go to an exhibition again!

I recognised the portrait of Norman Cornish, it's one I really like, the exhibition sounds great. To far for me. I also like the self portrait of Karl Hagedorn, I've just looked at his work and it is very interesting. His Spanish Dancer caught my eye in it's simplicity and style.
