Is Plagiarism a compliment or thievery ? Just curious .
It feels wrong to me to profit (financially or otherwise) on someone else’s creation and work. Unless really well known, for instance being inspired by a really well known painting such as Starry Night and doing an interpretation of it feels less like stealing in my eyes as you are less likely to claim it as your own, but Im not sure if that makes it ok.  I dont know actually.  It’s a tricky one.  C
Carrie that is going into the realms of copyright .There is , I think a seventy year cut off so artists like Van Gogh you can be inspired by but it’s always a good idea to credit the artist .   But pinching others contemporary  work is illegal ,  a lovely lady who posted regularly on here and is a very clever artist had had her work stolen mainly from the Far East and sold  for profit .
Oh no that’s awful! I know the TikTok platform seems to be rife for it. (I don’t use it nor have the app but seen some articles around it) where the app almost promotes using other people’s work.  It’s just not right.
I bet the lady wasn't very happy about it Sylvia. Plagiarism is passing someone else's work off as your own. So, I guess if the person doesn't know or are not given any credit or mention, then they are stealing something from them.
Exactly right Denise.  And no she wasn’t.
I think the problem is that these days people want to make fast easy money and don’t care much how it’s done . The big problem with social media is they it is relatively easy to high jack some ones  work if you know how too and are unscrupulous. It tracking them down that’s the problem like a lot of these scams and frauds that we here about . It’s so annoying and sad for the person who is the victim, and more importantly all your hard work claimed by some horrible S- - T hope they  the rot in hell.
Theft.   I'm pretty sure I know whose work you mean.  The problem is that there's no protection in law against the Chinese copyists, since the People's Republic isn't a signatory to the Berne Convention on copyright.  You could prosecute anyone outside of China who passed off work as their own, but that won't stem the flood if people insist on buying from these painting factories - especially since their websites will also be based in China.    As to whether it's a compliment or not - if so, it's one I could do without.    Although I do have a certain resentment that so far, I have done without it since, so far as I know, no one's tried to copy me.   Now - why?
Yes it is who you think it is , also stolen from other sources eg eastern bloc and yes the same problem with no legal redress.   Will P M you .
No one has tried to copy me, no surprise there then.
