I’ve just read that a book by Hockney, titled as above, was recently handed in to a charity shop. One of the staff members noticed that the separate enclosed limited edition original print, which came with the book at the time (making it a valuable collector’s piece), was still inside and in pristine condition after forty something years. To cut to the chase, it has fetched 41k at auction - which I suppose isn’t that astonishing considering his top works sell in the region of 70 to 100 million… yes, million! Almost certainly a lot more now that he is no longer with us. But… what a fantastic find.. I have many of his books but not this one. I’ve had a browse online and there are a few for sale at around the 2.5K bracket. I’d snap one up of course in a heartbeat if I could be sure that the original print was still present within the book. But it’s all a bit vague in the descriptions so I’m not about to risk it. I know Paul is always buying art books from charity shops, so he’ll enjoy reading this… Great story though which I thought I’d share with my artistic colleagues.

I brought along a copy of the catalogue from the RA 'A Bigger Picture' exhibition to my local art group. Friends there wanted to order a copy.  I paid £35 at the RA gallery, now for sale at over £130! Not heard of the Pools book, it must be rare

This is a book from the States asking 2000dollars but it doesn’t have the signed lithograph, it’s definitely Hockney’s signature and he did sign all thousand copies… but without the lithograph they can can keep it! This is the book, at least I think it is as I’ve seen different covers. This is a few hundred quid, so I’m assuming it isn’t one of the signed thousand copies!
With Sarah, Phil, Ellen, Rose the dentist, and the granddaughter whose name I forget.

I'd certainly pay for a copy with the lithograph, but - perhaps not  at that price.   Of  course, everyone with a  Hockney item will be interested in cashing in now - I don't blame them, there'll never be another.  But these prices ARE ridiculous, whatever one thinks of Hockney. Reminds me though of a scene from a programme in which DH was painting by the roadside in Yorkshire, and someone rolled up in a car  and - plainly not realizing who he was - offered to buy it; with perhaps a price tag of £500 in mind.  Whereas I would have grabbed their outstretched wallet in feverish greed, Hockney just smiled seraphically.

I’ve only found one online that contains the signature and the original lithograph - that’s on offer for a pricey 55k if anyone wants it!
