I love that one Helen!
What made me laugh was, we were in a cafe just around the corner from this mural, and googling ‘attractions’ nearby. This cat mural came up, plus ALSO an actual living cat called ‘Scooter the library cat’. He has 5 star reviews too 😂
That puss is priceless...love him yes I would have laughed as well Helen.   More soap with Wrights coal tar can't think why it would induce sleep.my husband always used it.   Love Norman  Rockwell stupidly gave away a large book of his illustrations. This is one from Wales and another I have remembered since time memorial. Sydney Curnes Vosper ...it's called Sale  M and for what ever reason was bought ny Lord Lever of Sunlight Soap for advertising ...apparently there are two paintings one in Cardiff the Welsh National gallery and on not sure but one in Lady Lever Gallery in PortSunlighy in Birkenhead. People can see the devil in her shawl... not quite sure where the significance is re soap.
What a great painting - look at the shine on the wood! Helen, that’s a fantastic one! Re coal tar soap etc Denise, you mean you never tried ‘Cadum for Madam’?

Always used Wrights Coal Tar soap. Still do. That, and "!Lavendo"  furniture polish are my favourite smells. (-:
Yes, I love the smell of lavender polish.  Toulouse Lautrec advertising the Moulin Rouge.I had the right hand poster years ago.

I remember your Welsh lady Sylvia, very familiar but didn’t know it was used for an ad! I looked up Pears soap ads and there were some really awful racist ones many years ago which would absolutely not be acceptable today thankfully.
I had the Moulin Rouge one on my wall for a few years, Marjorie.   (It's Tescos then, Sylvia, and they have better veg)
One of my favourite pieces of advertising by Laura Knight. Used to have a copy of this poster on my living room wall back in the eighties:  and I have shown this one before in Lews Art-Deco thread:

'Salem' always gives me the creeps!
Yes I know what you mean Russell apparently all the worshipers in the cape l are real. Some great images appearing.  The Moulin Rouge Lautrec one I think we all had on our walls along with Desiderata .
What an interesting thread! Found this 2020 Guardian link on art and advertising which some of you may like https://www.theguardian.com/culture/gallery/2020/feb/28/art-and-commerce-a-history-of-the-art-of-advertising-in-pictures Linked to a book by Julie Ann Lambert.
