Don't know whereabouts you live Sylvia - perhaps another country - ha ha. We have had abysmal weather for the first 16 days of June - thick, damp fog. Yesterday and today it has finally cheered up.
Wales Adele....lol. but as I said Im not daft enough to go out in crack pot weather....ha now I understand you live in the Glorious South... Our fist half of June was gobsmackingly amazing... lazing on my balconey applying factor 25.
No, I live near the Northeast coast - Loftus, which has its very own weather system, curtesy of the Cleveland Hills!!
Plein aire is fine if you prepare or use what's around for shelter. Nothing like painting what you see. Hey Robert, trust you're OK for a day's sketching outdoors on IOW early July or indoors if you prefer.

Just to come back on this one again, well, of course it isn't nearly always raining, it just seems like that at times. I paint around 200 pieces a year, that will be nearer 250 this year if I carry on as I am doing and I suppose 80% of those will be outdoor work, so let's stop griping about the occasional bad spell and just get out there and do it. The problem is with many artist's that they just can't be bothered to make the effort, and of course the lame excuse of bad weather is made the scapegoat. I know it's difficult if you are having mobility issues and so on, I have enormous mobility issues at present and have to rely on crutches to get around outdoors, so if I can do it, what's stopping you. Yes, lack of transport and various other issues as Robert has said, fully understandable reasons. So, to sum up, if you want to paint outdoors you will find a way, if you don't want to and it's not your thing well it doesn't matter, the main thing is to be creative and enjoy your painting and drawing, that's what it's all about.
Sketching outdoors is great. Painting (watercolours that is) - where do you plug in your hairdryer?
I have to admit I'm a bit shy when it comes to painting outdoors. I'm not really sure why - I've done it a few times and really enjoyed it. I like sketching from my car though, I've done this many times. I have blamed the weather for not painting outdoors. It rains when it's sunny here sometimes! At the moment though I'm not using weather as an excuse, I'm blaming midges.
I was planning to go with the local urban sketching group as usual yesterday, but it was very fine drizzle ( proper wet rain ) all day and I had a lot of indoor jobs to do, especially in prep for my show at Bournemouth in 3 weeks, so I got on with that. Then the sun came out so I helped my wife in the garden. Got some bonus sketching in today while the caravan being worked on, so another opportunity taken.
It's not too old going for outdoor painting. It's the most amazing feeling rather than compared to indoor.
