Hang on Studio Wall

I LIKE some of both the above mentioned artists work; I like some of the subjects of JV and I like DH tree....that he's been painting for most of his life. Not that I'm ever likely to be in a position to hang either on my wall but if I were, I wouldn't, I'd rather have a 'Bickley'. But on a lighter side, I have a friend that lives for art, he taught art all his working life and still does even though he's retired, his own art is collected and he collects art himself...has some serious artists work of the post impressionists. Whilst he was being rushed to theatre for open heart surgery clutching his chest, his worried wife holding on to his hand, the surgeon asked her if there was anything he was allergic to, and she said, "Jack Vettriano".

Personally I have nothing against decorative artists. Klimt was one and he is one of my favourites. JV's work could be described as nice! I see that he has been adopted by Whitewall Galleries now, who appeal to Joe public who has money to spare. Saw an interesting programme about him about a year ago and it showed him getting models and actors to pose for him to photograph, from which he would paint. He says that he likes to suggest a story in his paintings. However I am full of admiration for Hockney. Very interesting artist, you has been through several phases. It would be hard to generalise about his work, because of the variety therein. I cannot say that I like all of it - I can't relate to the gay stuff. But the portraiture and landscapes - Bring it on!
This discussion pops up every so often. Here is a newspaper article by a painter who has exhibited alongside Vettriano. http://www.thinkscotland.org/thinkculture/articles.html?read_full=12947&article=www.thinkscotland.org
Having seen that actual painting at the RA Hockney exhibition a few years back, it is massive and made up I think of something like 24 or so, maybe 36 large canvasses, it fills a whole wall and is quite a stunning piece, maybe 30/40 foot long as I recall and painted at the scene, what a remarkable achievement given his age etc. and is an insult for one of our colleagues to call his work 'tat' even if you are not terribly fond of Hockney. The greens by the way Sylvia are rather raw and vibrant, we couldn't get away with it without criticism but he is able to and I don't think that they look out of place personally.
Sheer brilliance, this was another huge piece, not as big mind you. Nice to see some lively debates on the forum this morning but that's my lot for now, treating the family to lunch.
